The Zinfandel Red Grape Variety is really an American classic wine. Originally, it was even thought that the grape was native to California but research has now proven that the grape actually originated in Croatia. The wine made from that grape was known as "primitivo" when it was made famous during the Roman Empire during the early days of Italy. The grape is now grown in California for the most part as Zinfandel red grapes grown better in cooler coastal locales. The color the wine from these grapes is an extremely deep red, almost black. The wine goes well with all types of food, everything from burgers to pasta in a tomato sauce. The flavor of these grapes is peppery, spicy yet has a bit of a fruity flavor also. Perhaps the most interesting fact about this grape is that it is also used to make white zinfandel wine. That is correct both wines are made out of the same red grape. To make the white wine the winemaker just removes the skins of the grape before making the wine leaving just the white fruit. The red skins are what give the red wine its color and hearty flavor. When made into a white wine the grapes end up making a sweet and light tasting wine. |
