Validguie, also known in France as Gros Auxerrois, is a red wine grape first grown here around 1874. At this time the main growing region was is in France in the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the South. It was After that, the vines became pretty widespread throughtout the Southern part of France. In the United States, during prohibition, the valdiguie grape became popular in Northern California because of high productivity of the vines. It then spread to the Central and Northern Coast as well as the central Valley of California. The grape is know by different names, depending on where it is grown. In Napa Valley, the well know wine producing region in California and other wine producing regions in the United State, the grape is known as the Napa Gamay. Valdiguié is most famously known for use in produciton of dark red wines that are low in alcohol. Some wine makers use a technique with the grap to produce a wine that a dark purplered with a very fruity taste. |
