| Description:
Tinta Barroca is a variety of red grape that is primarily cultivated in the Douro Valley region in Portugal. The vine is rigorous and grows fast and heartily but for the port, of which it is primarily used, it needs cool air and high altitudes, usually on the north and east slopes of the mountains in Douro Valley. They can also be found in some areas of South Africa. Because the bunches of Tinta Barroca are loose in their clustering, air is freely circulated around the grape and it is very resistant to spoilage. However, it is this same quality that makes them sensitive to drought and lack of water. The ripe grapes are abundant on the vine and have high sugar content. The tannins are strong in the thin skin and the overall character has a floral quality with overtones of black cherry and black plum. Tinta Barroca is often used as a mellowing blend. |
