| Description:
Garganega is a white grape variety grown in the northeastern Italian region of Veneto. It is one of most widely planted grape varietals in Italy and makes up the majority of the popular Venetian wine Soave. It also provides a basis to Gambellara. Although Soave has received a bad reputation in recent decades due to over production, in the Soave Classico region the Garganega has been used to create a very delicate, sophisticated wine with citrus and spicy notes. The Garganega's very vigorous growth rate and high yields have contributed to the over production of Soave and the dilution of those wine's quality. Efforts are being made now to reign in its abundance and create wines more deserving of the grape's innate quality. While best drunk young, the Garganega's high acidity does allow it to be used in the creation of sweet wines that age better and achieve higher complexity. |
