| Description:
Gewürztraminer white grapes are a heady, spicy variety, notorious for being the divas of the vineyard. They are quite demanding of attention, requiring precise soil conditions and careful timing of harvest. Too early, and they lack the spicy, fragrant quality that produces the signature wine; too late, and the acid levels drop too low to allow for proper fermentation. They require a somewhat cooler climate, but, paradoxically, are often damaged by frost due to their tendency to blossom early. Gewürztraminer grapes originated in the German regions of Baden and Rheinpfalz, and spread along the Rhine to the French region of Alsace, and have also been successful in Austria, Italy, and the US. The Gewürztraminer variety is a white wine grape with a pink or reddish skin color, and is quite high in sugar, resulting in an off-dry wine. Common aromatic pairings include lychee, floral, and fruity notes, for a wine that is excellent with fruit and cheese, as well fish and Asian cuisine. |
