| Description:
The white grape, Grenache Blanc, is similar to the red grape, Grenache Noir. The Unites States' Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms provisionally approved this variety of grape, in 2003. The easily grafted vines grow well in areas with hot days and cool night. Vines produce straw colored grapes high in sugar and acid. Resultant wines hint of green apple flavors and aromas. Grenache Blanc blends well and is used in the production of both white and red wines. It originated in Spain and is used in wines of Rioja and Navarre. From Spain it spread to France and is commonly planted in the vineyards of the Rhone Valley and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In Roussillon alone, over 37,000 acres of vineyards produce Grenache Blanc. Imported into the United States in 1992, the first crops were planted in 1996 and first grapes harvested in 1999. Over 100 acres are in production in California. |
