| Description:
St. Laurent is a red grape varietal most commonly grown in Austria and the Czech Republic. St. Laurent is considered a difficult grape to grow, as it is prone to both blossom drop and botrytis. The fragility of the grape led to sharp reductions in its planting, especially during the 1950s. However, St. Laurent is enjoying a resurgence of sorts due to its close resemblance with the tremendously popular Pinot Noir. In fact, the St. Laurent may be thought of as a bold cousin to the Pinot Noir, as a St. Laurent can be be rather quirkyin taste with robust hints of cherries and berries along with delicate tannins. St. Laurent red grapes are beginning to be grown in the United States particularly in Maryland and Virginia with good results. The growing season begins later on the Atlantic Seaboard than in Europe which makes St. Laurent less susceptible to the fruit diseases it experienced in Europe. |
