| Description:
The Syrah/Shiraz is a black-skinned grape that produces a complex and powerful red wine reminiscent of the earthy flavors of blackberry, cracked pepper, dark chocolate and red meat. Often referred to as a “man’s wine,” this smooth, full-bodied wine is frequently paired with roasted meats and winter vegetables. Syrah/Shiraz is well-aged due to its high tannin content, and is enhanced by the oak aromas of wine barrels. Although Syrah and Shiraz refer to the same variety of grape, they are used separately to differentiate origin and process. Syrah refers to the grapes originating in France’s Rhone valley, as well as those currently grown in California. California winemakers use the traditional French processes to produce an elegant, refined wine. Shiraz refers to the spicy modern wines produced in Australia. The Australian process is more high-tech and results in a bolder wine. Since the 1860’s, Shiraz has been Australia’s most important red wine grape. |
